Robots to the Rescue

Robots to the Rescue

The Challenge

One of B&B’s customers builds robots for tasks like bomb demolition, remote recon and first responder missions after earthquakes and other natural disasters. The robots must be able to transmit wirelessly, and simultaneously, from their sensors and from multiple IP cameras mounted on their chassis. External operators -- and there are often several, each one using a different laptop -- must be able to review the data in real time, provide the robot with instructions and communicate with other services when their reactions are required

The Solution
Our customer solved the problem with the B&B Electronics Airborne M2M Access Point, APXN-Q5428. The APXN-Q5428 is a dual band Ethernet Access point that can connect equipment to networks
via either the 2.4 Ghz and 5 Ghz license free bands. Where the 2.4 Ghz band is overcrowded the APXN-Q5428 can operate at 5 Ghz. Every radio environment is a bit different, so the ability to use either license free band provides vital flexibility. The AirborneM2M Access Point enables M2M equipment to create a self sufficient Wi-Fi network and easy access to equipment data or resources from WiFi enabled devices and supports up to 10 WiFi clients.  The product also has the capability to be switched from an access point to a client;  supporting both a single or dual RS-232/422/485 serial ports or a single 10/100 Mbps Ethernet port.  Additionally, the APXN-Q5428 rugged AirborneM2M Access Point features industrial strength packaging and support a wide temperature rating (-40° to 85°C) to withstand challenging M2M environments. Power options include 5-36VDC input or PoE 802.3af.  The AirborneM2M Access Point multi-layer security approach addresses the requirements of Enterprise-class networks and corporate IT departments.
The APXN-Q5428 is a member of B&B Electronics’ Airborne M2M family of dual band Wi-Fi M2M solutions. Airborne M2M devices provide reliable network connections, they support advanced Wi-Fi security authentication and encryption protocols, they’re built for rugged environments and they’re easy to set up and use. Models with serial ports are available, making it easy to network-enable legacy serial equipment.
B&B Electronics’ Airborne M2M AccessPoint technology is also available as an embedded module, APMN-Q551.  Our robotic equipment manufacturer can deploy integrate Airborne M2M technology directly into their systems, with all of the same features and capabilities – and an even smaller form factor.
