How to Connect Your Palm PilotT to a Serial Network

The Pilot, PalmPilot, Palm III, Palm IIIe, Palm IIIx, Palm IIIxe, Palm IIIc, Palm VII, and Palm VIIx handhelds by Palm, and the TRGpro®, and HandEra 330 by Handera all use the same synchronization cable.

This cable, available from Palm dealers, brings the Palm's serial port out to a DB9 female connector, configured as a DCE device. This allows the cable to be connected directly to a PC's serial port, which is configured as DTE. This family of Palm devices supports lines TD, RD, RTS and CTS and works at RS-232 compatible signal levels of ±5 volts. The cable for these handhelds is not compatible with any other handheld or other Palm handheld. The Palm Hotsync® cable is configured as a DCE device. Most likely, the device you are connecting to is also configured as DCE, so you will need to make a male to male null modem connection.
