Connect Your Current Loop Equipment to RS-232/422 Devices Current loop devices use current, or the absence of current, to transmit binary digits. These interfaces range from 60 mA to 20 mA and from 105 VDC down. B&B converters interface RS-232 and RS-422 systems to the most common current loop ports, 20 mA ports with open circuit voltages up to 30V. High speed optical isolators couple and isolate transmit and receive data. Many models can be modified for higher loop currents and voltages. Call B&B's Technical Support Department for details. In addition, a free application note explaining current loop interfaces is available. The B&B RS-232 to Current Loop Converters input RS-232 TD (pin 2) and output 20 mA current loop (T+ and T-). They also input current loop R+ and R- and output RS-232 RD (pin 3). All of these converters are optically isolated. The 232CL3 is port-powered on the RS-232 side of the converter. This converter is recommended for new applications. The converter can be operated active (source 20 mA current) or passive (does not source 20 mA current). When it is active, a 12 Volt power supply is also required for the current loop side. The 232PS2 is available for this purpose.
