(815) 433-5100 x215 e-mail: mfahrion@bb-elec.com March 11, 2005 For Immediate Release: 1 Watt Radio Modem Shatters Distance and Price Barriers Ottawa, IL - Can you install 40 miles of serial cable and boosters for $600? Not likely! But that same money will buy a pair of these new radio serial modems from B&B Electronics. They will transmit your serial signal transparently up to 40 miles. Admitted, the 40 mile figure is mountaintop to mountaintop, with high gain directional antennas. But even under more realistic conditions these radio modems will blast a serial signal further than devices costing a lot more. Output power is adjustable up to 1 watt. Coupled with extraordinary receiver sensitivity, this radio pair can full-duplex over long distances and through the most difficult environments. Special filtering technology blocks cell phone, pager and other wireless interference. The modem can operate from 9600 bps to 115.2kbps and transfers RS-232 /422/485 serial signals. Its over-the-air data rate is 120kbps. It is mounted in a compact anodized aluminum enclosure with a ½ wave dipole whip antenna. Each transceiver carries FCC approvals for use in the USA and IC approvals for Canada. The modems provide 256-bit AES encryption – the highest encryption standard available – for maximum security for sensitive data. Extreme efficiency makes this radio modem easy on power, too. Transmitting at full 1 watt power, it draws just 800mA at 9 volts. Receiving requires just 110mA, and rest mode draws only 17mA. Lower broadcast power levels draw even less power- 100mW output requires just 245mA. For harsh environments, this radio modem is also available in a NEMA-rated case. It is suitable for use in most weather conditions, including rain, snow, ice, dust and wind. This protection is especially attractive for applications such as SCADA, electronic signs and fleet management that constantly deal with electronic devices operating in fluctuating outdoor climates. These new radio modems are available from B&B Electronics.
