Ethernet enable Modbus serial ports on industrial equipment
New converters from B&B Electronics change Modbus ASCII/RTU to Modbus/TCP

Modubs Serial ConverterOttawa, IL - As industrial workplaces replace their old data communications systems with Ethernet, managers are faced with the choice of either replacing millions of dollars worth of Modbus controlled PLCs and other devices, or of finding a way to translate the Ethernet signals to talk to the Modbus devices.

A new pair of Ethernet to Modbus interpreters has been introduced by B&B Electronics, Ottawa, Illinois. These units provide a convenient and cost-effective method of connecting Ethernet TCP/IP networks to new and existing Modbus ASCII/RTU serial devices.

The compact, 1.25 x 4.5 x 4.75 in (3.2 x 11.3 x 12.2 cm), cases can be clipped to DIN rail or mounted to a panel. LEDs indicate Power On, Link Integrity, and Activity. Outside power is 10 to 30 VDC and operating temperature range is -20° to 80° C.

A quick-start guide and installation wizard are on the supplied CD. Configuration is easy via telnet console and may be password protected. The unit auto detects 10/100 Mbps and data rates from 300 to 115,200 bps are supported.

Model MES1A provides this connection for Modbus devices with RS-232 interfaces. Model MES1B is for Modbus devices with RS-422 four-wire point-to-point interfaces, or RS-485 four or two-wire multi-drop bus connections.

The new converters are under $300 each. For further information or a catalog, visit the
B&B Electronics website at www.bb-elec.com.
